A rare work of narrative non-fiction that illuminates a world most of us try not to see: the daily lives of the severely mentally ill, who are medicated, marginalized, locked away, and shunned. Susan Doherty´s groundbreaking book brings us a population of lost souls, ill-served by society, feared, shunted from locked wards to rooming houses to the streets to jail and back again. For the past 10 years, some of the people who cycle in and out of the severely ill wards of the Douglas Institute in Montreal, have found a friend in Susan, who volunteers on the ward, and then follows her friends out into the world as they struggle to get through their days. With their full cooperation, she brings us their stories, which challenge the ways we think about people with mental illness. The spine of the book is the life of Caroline Evans (not her real name), a woman in her early 60s whom Susan has known since she was a bright and sunny school girl. Caroline had formed a close friendship with Susan and shared stories from her life; through her, we experience what living with schizophrenia over time is really like. She has been through it all, including the way the justice system treats the severely mentally ill: at one point, she believed that she could save her roommate from the devil by pouring boiling water into her ear....Susan interleaves Caroline´s story with vignettes about her other friends, human stories that reveal their hopes, their circumstances, their personalities, their humanity. She´s found that if she can hang in through the first 10 to 15 minutes of every coffee date with someone in the grip of psychosis, then true communication results. Their ´´madness´´ is not otherworldly: instead it tells us something about how they´re surviving their lives and what they´ve been through. The Ghost Garden is not only touching, but carries a cargo of compassion and empathy. ´´This is a book I wish I could have written. Susan Doh 1. Language: English. Narrator: Paula Kaye. The Brighton series continues and “takes a turn towards the occult” with “well-wrought prose, an appealing new character . . . and a deadly climax” ( Booklist ). Something strange is in the Brighton air. Everywhere newly-promoted Sarah Gilchrist looks, unsettling things are happening. A Wicker Man is burned on the beach at dawn with a body inside; a painting titled The Devil’s Altar is stolen from the Brighton Museum; a vicar who casts out demons goes missing; and a rare medieval manuscript of the occult Key of Solomon is stolen from the Jubilee Library. Then Gilchrist’s flatmate, Kate Simpson, discovers that acts of sacrilege and grave robbing have been routinely taking place in Brighton and the surrounding villages. And ex-Chief Constable Bob Watts is puzzling over inscriptions in his late father’s books. Specifically, books by occult writers Dennis Wheatley, Colin Pearson—and the feared Aleister Crowley, cremated in Brighton in 1947. Old Religion and New Age collide and the body count mounts as the Devil’s Moon slowly rises . . . “Guttridge’s fourth dispatch from Brighton features many of the same characters as the first three but is more cerebral and slower paced. In its own different way, however, it’s just as literate and exciting.” — Kirkus Reviews
Outside the pale of the Abbey of Saint Peters and Saint Paul, in September of the year of our Lord 1140, a priestly emissary for King Stephen has been reported missing. But inside the pale, what troubles Brother Cadfael is a proud, secretive 19-year-old novice. Brother Cadfael has never seen two men more estranged than the Lord of Aspley and Meriet, the son he coldly delivers to the abbey to begin a religious vocation. Meriet, meek by day, is so racked by dreams at night that his howls earn him the nickname the Devil´s Novice. Shunned and feared, Meriet is soon linked to the missing priest´s dreadful fate. Only Brother Cadfael believes in Meriet´s innocence, and only the good sleuth can uncover the truth before a boy´s pure passion, not evil intent, leads a novice to the noose. 1. Language: English. Tall, blond, and dangerous, Jude is the most feared vampire in town, and the minute he sees her, he wants Luz. Vampires and shapeshifters don´t date, but he makes her an offer she can´t refuse - a blood exchange that will help her control her panic attacks and give her the life she´s always wanted. Luz is desperate - she takes Jude up on his offer. But she doesn´t expect to fall for the darkly seductive vampire - or to be plunged into danger when her past comes calling. When Jude´s own dark secret comes to light, she begins to question her deal with the devil and wonder if she and Jude can make it...or if they´ll die trying. Author´s Note While I have tried to handle Luz´s past trauma sensitively, some listeners, particularly those with a history of sexual abuse, may find this story disturbing. 1. Language: English. A sharp, witty, and hugely entertaining debut novel, The Devil Wears Prada is The Nanny Diaries set in the world of high fashion. Welcome to the dollhouse, baby! When Andrea first sets foot in the plush Manhattan offices of Runway she knows nothing. She´s never heard of the world´s most fashionable magazine, or its feared and fawned-over editor, Miranda Priestly. But she´s going to be Miranda´s assistant, a job millions of girls would die for. A year later, she knows altogether too much: That it´s a sacking offence to wear anything lower than a three-inch heel to work. But that there´s always a fresh pair of Manolos for you in the accessories cupboard. That Miranda believes Hermes scarves are disposable, and you must keep a life-time supply on hand at all times. That eight stone is fat. That you can charge cars, manicures, anything at all to the Runway account, but you must never, ever, leave your desk, or let Miranda´s coffee get cold. And that at 3 a.m. on a Sunday, when your boyfriend´s dumping you because you´re always at work, and your best friend´s just been arrested, if Miranda phones, you jump. Most of all, Andrea knows that Miranda is a monster who makes Cruella de Ville look like a fluffy bunny. But also that this is her big break, and it´s going to be worth it in the end. Isn´t it? 1.
