True War Crimes of the Gestapo: Stories of the Feared German Police Force... The Gestapo were the secret police that Hitler instituted to ferret out spies and other people who did not fall in line with his ideologies; if, for instance, someone was suspected of being of Jewish origin, Hitler would send the Gestapo to round them up, take them into custody, interrogate them - often with violent and painful methods - and then either kill or send them to a concentration camp where they would probably die in any case. When the Second World War came to an end, the Gestapo was found to be responsible for the deaths of millions of people. At the Nuremberg Trials, where most of the WW2 criminals were put on trial and then punished, the Gestapo was declared to be an official criminal organization and many of their leaders were convicted of a number of war crimes. In the end, the German secret police force was an organization that struck terror and fear into the hearts of all civilians. What made them so effective was not just their field skills or their ability to complete their mission, but the fact that they enjoyed what they did and truly believed in the skewered Nazi ideology of racism and Anti-Semitism. We will look at some of the horrific stories of the Gestapo, where they destroyed thousands of innocents and trace the lives of a few individual police offers who are known for their brutality and their cruelty during the war... Even if you are not the kind of person that loves history, there is a pretty good chance that you will have heard of Julius Caesar, even though he walked on the Earth over 2,000 years ago. Quite simply, he is the most well-known Roman citizen who ever lived and is the one emperor that has stuck in the minds of people for thousands of years due to his actions throughout his reign. Such was his power, and the desire of others to emulate him, that even his name spawned terms such as czar and kaiser, which have been used by other emperors centuries later to announce that they had absolute power. In other words, Julius Caesar has been held in high regard by almost anybody that wished to follow in his footsteps in some way and the fact that his name has entered into common language is testimony to the skill of the man himself. Throughout this amazing book, we will explore his early life and show how that shaped his character and then, eventually, his entire career. We will explore the highs and severe lows of his life from being forced into the army to effectively save his life, to being captured by pirates, conquests, revolts, civil war, supreme power, and of course his brutal assassination. This book does not go on hearsay, but instead it focuses on details from sources of the time. It charts his rise to power, how brutal he could be at times with people that crossed him or stood up against him. It looks at the very reasons that could have ultimately led to his assassination. Was it because he was getting too much power? Was it due to him making constitutional reforms that led to the rich getting poorer? Was it for the greater good of the empire or was it all about personal gain? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jennifer Howe. Why have societies all across the world feared witchcraft? This book delves deeply into its context, beliefs, and origins in Europe´s history. The witch came to prominence - and often a painful death - in early modern Europe, yet her origins are much more geographically diverse and historically deep. In this landmark book, Ronald Hutton traces witchcraft from the ancient world to the early modern state. This book sets the notorious European witch trials in the widest and deepest possible perspective and traces the major historiographical developments of witchcraft. Hutton, a renowned expert on ancient, medieval, and modern paganism and witchcraft beliefs, combines Anglo-American and continental scholarly approaches to examine attitudes on witchcraft and the treatment of suspected witches across the world, including in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Australia, and North and South America, and from ancient pagan times to current interpretations. His fresh anthropological and ethnographical approach focuses on cultural inheritance and change while considering shamanism, folk religion, the range of witch trials, and how the fear of witchcraft might be eradicated. 1. A Sweeping, Dramatic History of the Americans Who Chose to Side with the British in the Revolution.... The American Revolution was not simply a battle between independence-minded colonists and the oppressive British. As Thomas B. Allen reminds us, it was also a savage and often deeply personal civil war, in which conflicting visions of America pitted neighbor against neighbor and Patriot against Tory on the battlefield, the village green, and even in church. In this outstanding and vital history, Allen tells the complete story of these other Americans, tracing their lives and experiences throughout the revolutionary period. New York City and Philadelphia were Tory strongholds through much of the war, and at times in the Carolinas and Georgia there were more trained and armed Tories than Redcoats. The Revolution also produced one of the greatest and least known migrations in Western history. More than 80,000 Tories left America, most of them relocating to Canada. John Adams once said that he feared there would never be a good history of the American Revolution because so many documents had left the country with the Tories. Based on documents in archives from Nova Scotia to London, Tories adds a fresh perspective to our knowledge of the Revolution and sheds an important new light on the little-known figures whose lives were forever changed when they remained faithful to their mother country. 1. Here for the first time is the full story of the seashore: its natural and social history, spectacles, and scandals. The turquoise surf and sugary sand of the beach make it a favorite retreat today, but this wasn´t always so. The oceans of antiquity engendered contradictory feelings. Greek and Roman myths filled it with bellicose monsters and alluring sirens. Medieval Europeans feared immersion in water. But the rediscovery of its medicinal attractions in the 17th century soon glorified the beach as an avenue for social pursuits. In this elegant and illuminating account, Lencek and Bosker chart the evolution of the seaside from the margins of civilization, when ´´exotic´´ meant remote and terrifying, to its present role as the center of recreation and escape. Sexuality, health, fashion, sport, beach architecture, and beachwear all have their place in the progression toward the beach resorts that represent Nirvana for the 20th-century pleasure seeker. 1. The Spartan Military: The History and Legacy of...

There have been no shortage of great warrior societies in history, including the Romans, Mongols, Macedonians, and Vikings, and the list goes on. Yet one humble city in particular, nestled in a valley near the Eurotas River in the Greek region of the Peloponnese and once ridiculed as little more than a cluster of villages inhabited by uncouth shepherds, produced the most famous warrior elite the world has ever known. The most unique city-state in ancient Greece was Sparta, which continues to fascinate contemporary society. It is not entirely clear why Sparta placed such a great emphasis on having a militaristic society, but the result was that military fitness was a preoccupation from birth. If a Spartan baby did not appear physically fit at birth, it was left to die. Spartan children underwent military training around the age of seven years old, and every male had to join the army around the age of 18. The Spartans, whose carefully constructed approach to warfare and - there is no other word for it - Spartan way of life, earned the grudging admiration of all of Greece and succeeded in establishing themselves in the years following the reforms of the semi-legendary ruler Lycurgus as the greatest military force in all of Hellas. Athens might have the mightiest fleet and the greatest cadre of philosophers and dramatists, Thessaly might have had the most vaunted cavalry, and the great city-states of Argos, Thebes, and Corinth all had their own claims to fame, but on the battlefield the Spartan phalanx stood without peer. So feared were they in Greece that their very appearance on the battlefield could cause entire enemy armies to flee in terror, and in one of history´s most famous battles, 300 Spartan warriors headed a combined Greek force which held off the hundreds of thousands of Persian warriors of Xerxes´ invading army for three days at Thermopylae, inflicting an estimated 20,000 casualties upon them before dying to the last man rather than... 1. At some point during the 1930s, an altered form of simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV, was transferred from a chimpanzee to a human hunter. This most likely occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo when hunters handled and consumed meat from hunted chimpanzees. Those initially infected by the chimpanzees would spread the disease further, and a generation later, in 1959, a man in the Democratic Republic of Congo died due to AIDS-related complications. Using blood plasma, researchers have determined he was the first documented case of the disease in humans. Flashing forward to the 1970s, the disease continued to spread throughout the world undetected. It reached countries such as the US and England, passing the radar of most medical professionals, and as a result, no research was performed during the decade. By 1981, an extremely rare type of skin cancer, Kaposi’s sarcoma, became increasingly common among gay men in New York City and California. This, coupled with high rates of pneumonia, led researchers to believe immunodeficiency was on the rise due to a disease. By the end of 1981, 121 Americans had died as a result of the unknown disease, and the following year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, made initial predictions related to the disease. They hypothesized the immune deficiencies present in gay men was the result of an infection. As a result, the phrase acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, was coined. They also learned other groups, such as drug users and hemophiliacs, were at equally high risk of contracting the disease. By 1983, the disease had reached five continents and was becoming more widespread in Europe. Gay men who had visited the US and individuals who had connections to Africa were especially at risk. At this point, researchers began to investigate these ties. The disease was finally discovered in 1984 by Luc Montagnier at France’s Pasteur Insti... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tracey Norman. The Hidden History of the Knights Templar: The ...

Full of incredible turns of events including secrets, deceits, lies and betrayals, the history of the Knights Templar from their triumphant conquests to their abrupt fall still fascinates. Find out the hidden history of the Knights Templar that really led to their demise. The Knights Templar existed officially for less than 200 years. Founded to protect pilgrims who were travelling through the Holy Lands, their rise to power was sudden. They became some of the most feared warriors in the region, they had a mandate from God, they controlled perhaps the world´s first real banking system, and they waged war against anyone who tried to wrestle Christianity and seize holy grounds from the control of the Catholic Church. Within their short lifespan, they quickly became one of the most powerful societies in Europe, if not the world. But, just as they rose to power with relative speed, they fell from grace just as fast. Forged in the crucible of Middle Eastern conflict, their power was soon resented and feared. Before they could become even more powerful, the greatest nations in Europe and the Church turned on them. The once powerful Templars were hunted, caught, tortured, and eventually burned at the stake. According to their prosecutors, they were a devil-worshipping secret society who spat on the cross and plotted against the Pope. They were officially disbanded and their members treated with extreme contempt and prejudice. Or so goes the official story. In this book, we will not only look into the official history of the Knights Templar, but will examine the various ways their influence and ideas have tunneled their way into the modern world. A group this powerful does not vanish overnight. Instead, their history has been linked to the Freemasons, to vicious curses, to the butchery of the Crusades, and even to Christian relics such as the Holy Grail. For many people, the Templars did not vanish and they did not relinquish their tight grip on the power....... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Charles D. Baker.
