A rare work of narrative non-fiction that illuminates a world most of us try not to see: the daily lives of the severely mentally ill, who are medicated, marginalized, locked away, and shunned. Susan Doherty´s groundbreaking book brings us a population of lost souls, ill-served by society, feared, shunted from locked wards to rooming houses to the streets to jail and back again. For the past 10 years, some of the people who cycle in and out of the severely ill wards of the Douglas Institute in Montreal, have found a friend in Susan, who volunteers on the ward, and then follows her friends out into the world as they struggle to get through their days. With their full cooperation, she brings us their stories, which challenge the ways we think about people with mental illness. The spine of the book is the life of Caroline Evans (not her real name), a woman in her early 60s whom Susan has known since she was a bright and sunny school girl. Caroline had formed a close friendship with Susan and shared stories from her life; through her, we experience what living with schizophrenia over time is really like. She has been through it all, including the way the justice system treats the severely mentally ill: at one point, she believed that she could save her roommate from the devil by pouring boiling water into her ear....Susan interleaves Caroline´s story with vignettes about her other friends, human stories that reveal their hopes, their circumstances, their personalities, their humanity. She´s found that if she can hang in through the first 10 to 15 minutes of every coffee date with someone in the grip of psychosis, then true communication results. Their ´´madness´´ is not otherworldly: instead it tells us something about how they´re surviving their lives and what they´ve been through. The Ghost Garden is not only touching, but carries a cargo of compassion and empathy. ´´This is a book I wish I could have written. Susan Doh 1. Language: English. Narrator: Paula Kaye. Mental illness is a psychological pattern that occurs in an individual and it causes distress and disability. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Mental illnesses are still feared and misunderstood by many people, but the fear will disappear as people learn more about them. But in order to be fearless you must get the following information. Mental illness is very common. One out of every four people in Britain is dealing with a mental illness. Mental illnesses are some of the least understood conditions in society. As a result of this condition, many people face prejudice and discrimination in their everyday lives. However, most people can lead productive and fulfilling lives with appropriate treatment and support. For some people, drugs and other medical treatments are helpful, but for other they are not. Medical treatment may only be a part of what helps recovery, and not necessarily the main part. It is not a fault of someone rather this is not a sign of weakness, and it´s not something to be ashamed of. Persons suffering from any of the severe mental disorders present with a variety of symptoms that may include inappropriate anxiety, disturbances of thought and perception, deregulation of mood, and cognitive dysfunction. What was the likelihood my adopted daughter would have my father´s hazel eyes and my mother´s mental illness? In this fiercely candid memoir, Dr. Pruchno, a scientist widely acclaimed for her research on mental illness and families, shows how mental illness threatened to destroy her own family. Not once, but twice. As a child, she didn´t understand her mother´s episodes of crippling sadness or whirlwind activity. As a mother, she feared her daughter Sophie would follow in the footsteps of the grandmother Sophie never knew. Unraveling the mysteries of her mother´s and daughter´s illnesses, Pruchno fought to preserve her marriage and protect her son. But it was not until she came to terms with her own secrets that she truly understood the destructive and pervasive effects mental illness has on families. Surrounded by Madness is transforming. As this best seller predicted, Trump has only grown more erratic and dangerous as the pressures on him mount. This new edition includes new essays bringing the audiobook up to date - because this is still not normal.Originally released in fall 2017, The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump was a runaway best seller. Alarmed Americans and international onlookers wanted to know: What is wrong with him? That question still plagues us. The Trump administration has proven as chaotic and destructive as its opponents feared, and the man at the center of it all remains a cipher.Constrained by the APA’s ´´Goldwater rule”, which inhibits mental health professionals from diagnosing public figures they have not personally examined, many of those qualified to weigh in on the issue have shied away from discussing it at all. The public has thus been left to wonder whether he is mad, bad, or both. The prestigious mental health experts who have contributed to the revised and updated version of The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump argue that their moral and civic ´´duty to warn´´ supersedes professional neutrality. Whatever affects him affects the nation: From the trauma people have experienced under the Trump administration to the cultlike characteristics of his followers, he has created unprecedented mental health consequences across our nation and beyond. With eight new essays, this edition will cover the dangerous ramifications of Trump´s unnatural state. It’s not all in our heads. It’s in his. In some people exam anxiety and the imagination of failure are so unpleasant that during preparation for an exam, the concentration and learning success is suffering significantly. Then, at the time of examination, there may be the often-feared mental block or excessive anxiety that makes a successful exam impossible. In this imaginary journey, the listener gradually learns to deal with his or her fears. The thoughts of fear are not simply swiped away with positive thinking, but the listener is guided step by step to experience a real exam in his or her imagination. Only out of this situation can the fears be resolved and converted using various techniques of NLP and hypnosis. Every student should use this guided imagery as soon as possible and regularly during his or her preparation time. After a few repeated hearings, many listeners already notice a more relaxed learning environment. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Allen Logue. For an overpopulated Earth, whose resources are strained to the breaking point, there is only one place to look for relief: straight up. With the successful completion of the Padrugoi Space Station, humanity has at last achieved its first large-scale permanent presence in space. Additional bases are feverishly being built on the Moon and on Mars, stepping-stones to the greatest adventure in all history: the colonization of alien worlds. Already, long-range telescopes have identified a number of habitable planets orbiting other stars. Now it´s just a question of getting there. But there are those who, for selfish motives of their own, want Padrugoi and the other outposts to fail - people who will stop at nothing to maintain their power or to avenge its loss. Standing in their way are the Talented, men and women gifted with extraordinary mental powers that have made them as feared as they are respected - and utterly indispensable to the colonization effort. There is Peter Reidinger, a teenage paraplegic who is the strongest telekinetic ever, his mind capable of teleporting objects and people thousands of miles in the blink of an eye. Yet all his power cannot repair his damaged spine or allow him to feel the gentle touch of a loved one. There is also Rhyssa Owne, the powerful telepath and mother hen to Peter and the rest of her ´´children´´ - and a fierce, unrelenting fighter against the prejudice that would deny the Talented the right to lead happy and productive lives. And Amariyah, an orphan girl who loves two things in the world above all others: gardening and Peter Reidinger. And woe to anyone who harms either one of them - for the young girl´s talent may prove to be the most amazing of all. Now, as sabotage and attempted murder strike the Station, it´s up to the Talented to save the day. Only, who´s going to save the Talented? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sharon Williams. In 2000 Dennis O´Donnell was approached to work as an orderly in the Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit of a large hospital in central Scotland. ´I don´t know if I´m the man you want,´ he told the Charge Nurse. ´I´m not a fighter.´ ´I don´t need fighters,´ the Nurse replied. ´I need people who can listen.´ The Locked Ward is an extraordinary memoir that sets out to reveal the true story of life in a psychiatric ward - the fear, the violence and despair, and also the care and the compassion. Recounting the stories of the patients he worked with, and those of the friends he made on the ward, O´Donnell provides a detailed account of day-to-day life behind the doors of the most feared and stigmatised environment in healthcare. In doing so, he examines the major mental disorders, their symptoms and manifestations, and how certain triggers such as religion, sex, wealth, health and drugs bear influence; the methods of treatment, by medication, therapy and conversation; the love and support of patients´ friends and family members; success stories and failures, and attitudes to psychiatric illness, both by the authorities, by those around him - and his own. Over seven years O´Donnell witnessed the day-to-day lives of people suffering from the most hair-raising illnesses. What emerges is a document of humanity and humour, a remarkable memoir that sheds light on a world that still remains largely unknown. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Dennis O´Donnell. Have you ever thought that someone in your life currently or someone you were involved with in the past is a narcissist? Perhaps you think that you may be living with one. You, or someone you know, could even have horrific stories to tell of Machiavellian encounters with your ´´loved one´´ that just wouldn´t stop. You may think that you are being treated like an ´´object´´, used for their every desire, or used like you are a slave, and you just can´t understand why. Some poor souls who believe they have been victims of narcissism tell of going through hell, then ending up divorced and millions of dollars in debt. Or you are positive your boss is a narcissist and you need to figure out how to deal with it, or you are going to ´´go crazy´´ or resign before you do. Maybe people have accused you of being a narcissist, and you think this accusation is just a nasty way of telling you they think you are selfish. Of course, you are better than most everyone else. Why can´t the world just accept it? Why won´t everybody do what you tell them to do? They know you are always right! Or have you ever feared that because you have so many ´´broken´´ relationships that you are indeed a narcissist? What is narcissism anyway? Is it really a mental problem that some people have, or is it just a ´´bad personality type´´? If it is a mental condition, how do you get it? Is it contagious? Is it ´´terminal´´? Can it be treated with drugs? Why in the world would anybody call the love of self narcissistic? I heard that a certain amount of narcissism is healthy, and without having it, you are going to get trampled on in life. Is this true? Where did this term come from? Once you have narcissism, if it is real, can anybody really do anything about it? Can a doctor help my spouse or my boss or not? If so, what kind of doctor? 1. Language: English.
