From the author of Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph Over Tragedy ´´Joseph Barboza is the most dangerous individual known.” -FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, 1965 Joe Barboza knew that there were two requirements for getting inducted into the Mafia. You had to be Sicilian. And you had to commit a contract killing. The New Bedford-born mobster was a proud Portuguese, not Sicilian, but his dream to be part of La Cosa Nostra proved so strong that he thought he could create a loophole. If he killed enough men, if he did enough of the Mafia’s dirtiest biddings, then they would have no choice but to make him a Made Man. Barboza’s brutal rise during one of the deadliest mob wars in US history became the stuff of legend, both on the bloodied streets of Boston and in the offices of the FBI and the US Attorney General. He took sick joy in his crimes, and it became increasingly difficult for the mob to keep the Animal on his leash. But soon the hunter became the hunted. Betrayed by the mob and now on the run, Boston’s most notorious contract killer forged a Faustian bargain with two unscrupulous FBI agents - a pact that would transform the US criminal justice system. From false testimony and manipulated evidence that sent mob leaders to death row, to the creation of the Witness Protection Program so the feds could protect their prized, cold-blooded witness, this was the horrific, dramatic first act in a story of murder and FBI corruption still being played out today in the news and the courtroom with the capture and trial of Whitey Bulger. Barboza’s legacy, buried for years thanks to the murders or deaths of its participants, is finally coming to light and being told in its unvarnished brutality by one of America’s most respected true crime writers. 1. Even if you are not the kind of person that loves history, there is a pretty good chance that you will have heard of Julius Caesar, even though he walked on the Earth over 2,000 years ago. Quite simply, he is the most well-known Roman citizen who ever lived and is the one emperor that has stuck in the minds of people for thousands of years due to his actions throughout his reign. Such was his power, and the desire of others to emulate him, that even his name spawned terms such as czar and kaiser, which have been used by other emperors centuries later to announce that they had absolute power. In other words, Julius Caesar has been held in high regard by almost anybody that wished to follow in his footsteps in some way and the fact that his name has entered into common language is testimony to the skill of the man himself. Throughout this amazing book, we will explore his early life and show how that shaped his character and then, eventually, his entire career. We will explore the highs and severe lows of his life from being forced into the army to effectively save his life, to being captured by pirates, conquests, revolts, civil war, supreme power, and of course his brutal assassination. This book does not go on hearsay, but instead it focuses on details from sources of the time. It charts his rise to power, how brutal he could be at times with people that crossed him or stood up against him. It looks at the very reasons that could have ultimately led to his assassination. Was it because he was getting too much power? Was it due to him making constitutional reforms that led to the rich getting poorer? Was it for the greater good of the empire or was it all about personal gain? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jennifer Howe. True War Crimes of the Gestapo: Stories of the Feared German Police Force... The Gestapo were the secret police that Hitler instituted to ferret out spies and other people who did not fall in line with his ideologies; if, for instance, someone was suspected of being of Jewish origin, Hitler would send the Gestapo to round them up, take them into custody, interrogate them - often with violent and painful methods - and then either kill or send them to a concentration camp where they would probably die in any case. When the Second World War came to an end, the Gestapo was found to be responsible for the deaths of millions of people. At the Nuremberg Trials, where most of the WW2 criminals were put on trial and then punished, the Gestapo was declared to be an official criminal organization and many of their leaders were convicted of a number of war crimes. In the end, the German secret police force was an organization that struck terror and fear into the hearts of all civilians. What made them so effective was not just their field skills or their ability to complete their mission, but the fact that they enjoyed what they did and truly believed in the skewered Nazi ideology of racism and Anti-Semitism. We will look at some of the horrific stories of the Gestapo, where they destroyed thousands of innocents and trace the lives of a few individual police offers who are known for their brutality and their cruelty during the war... In 1971, President Nixon imposed national price controls and took the United States off the gold standard, an extreme measure intended to end an ongoing currency war that had destroyed faith in the U.S. dollar. Today we are engaged in a new currency war, and this time the consequences will be far worse than those that confronted Nixon. Currency wars are one of the most destructive and feared outcomes in international economics. At best, they offer the sorry spectacle of countries´ stealing growth from their trading partners. At worst, they degenerate into sequential bouts of inflation, recession, retaliation, and sometimes actual violence. Left unchecked, the next currency war could lead to a crisis worse than the panic of 2008. Currency wars have happened before-twice in the last century alone-and they always end badly. Time and again, paper currencies have collapsed, assets have been frozen, gold has been confiscated, and capital controls have been imposed. And the next crash is overdue. Recent headlines about the debasement of the dollar, bailouts in Greece and Ireland, and Chinese currency manipulation are all indicators of the growing conflict. As James Rickards argues in Currency Wars, this is more than just a concern for economists and investors. The United States is facing serious threats to its national security, from clandestine gold purchases by China to the hidden agendas of sovereign wealth funds. Greater than any single threat is the very real danger of the collapse of the dollar itself. Baffling to many observers is the rank failure of economists to foresee or prevent the economic catastrophes of recent years. Not only have their theories failed to prevent calamity, they are making the currency wars worse. The U. S. Federal Reserve has engaged in the greatest gamble in the history of finance, a sustained effort to stimulate the economy by printing money on a trillion-dollar scale. Its solutions present hidden new dangers while resolving none of the current dilemmas. While the outcome of the new currency war is not yet certain, some version of the worst-case scenario is almost inevitable if U.S. and world economic leaders fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors. Rickards untangles the web of failed paradigms, wishful thinking, and arrogance driving current public policy and points the way toward a more informed and effective course of action.

In 1875, the Great Sioux War of 1876-77, the last serious Sioux war erupted, when the Dakota gold rush penetrated the Black Hills. The U.S. Government decided to stop evicting trespassers from the Black Hills, and offered to buy the land from the Sioux. When they refused, the Government decided instead to take the land, and gave the Lakota until January 31, 1876 to return to reservations. They were led in the field by Crazy Horse and inspired by Sitting Bull´s earlier vision of victory. Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader who led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him, at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement. I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. So begins Alexander’s extraordinary confession on the eve of his greatest crisis of leadership. By turns heroic and calculating, compassionate and utterly merciless, Alexander recounts with a warrior’s unflinching eye for detail the blood, the terror, and the tactics of his greatest battlefield victories. Whether surviving his father’s brutal assassination, presiding over a massacre, or weeping at the death of a beloved comrade-in-arms, Alexander never denies the hard realities of the code by which he lives: the virtues of war. But as much as he was feared by his enemies, he was loved and revered by his friends, his generals, and the men who followed him into battle. Often outnumbered, never outfought, Alexander conquered every enemy the world stood against him - but the one he never saw coming.... 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Lee.
