This is the book that started it all! The basis for the smash hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Gregory Maguire´s breathtaking New York Times bestseller Wicked views the land of Oz, its inhabitants, its Wizard, and the Emerald City, through a darker and greener (not rosier) lens. Brilliantly inventive, Wicked offers us a radical new evaluation of one of the most feared and hated characters in all of literature: the much maligned Wicked Witch of the West who, as Maguire tells us, wasn´t nearly as Wicked as we imagined.
Christopher Hinz´s award winning novel stunningly reimagined as a graphic novel. Two hundred years after a nuclear apocalypse forced humanity to flee Earth, humans still remember the planet´s most feared warriors - the Paratwa, genetically modified killers who occupy two bodies controlled by one vicious mind. The legendary Paratwa named Reemul, known as the Liege-Killer, was the deadliest of them all. Now someone has revived Reemul from stasis and sent him to terrorize the peaceful orbital colonies of Earth. Is this an isolated incident, or just the opening salvo in a plan to take control of the entire human race?
Drawing upon Queen Victoria´s previously unpublished journals, Elizabeth Longford´s classic biography recalls the contrasts and curiosities of an earlier era with exquisite detail - and transforms the queen from a severe, time-worn effigy into a human being who loved, feared and fumed. Longford probes the contradictions of a woman who wore a bonnet instead of a crown at her Golden Jubilee and yet was recognised always as both dignified and formidable. She chronicles both the Queen´s public life and her emotional travails, including surprisingly stormy passages in her and Prince Albert´s otherwise loving marriage. A refreshingly human image of the Queen emerges: voluble, passionate, politic and articulate, with an irresistible mixture of grandeur and simplicity.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is defined as the progressive reduction of kidney function that occurs as a result of primary or secondary kidney diseases. CKD is characterized by several extra-renal complications. The cardiovascular complications are the most feared because they are the most common cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with endstage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing either hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD). Indeed, atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, extraosseous calcification (coronary artery calcifications, vascular and cardiac valves calcification) and left ventricular hypertrophy are the commonest factors responsible for fatal and not fatal cardiovascular events in ESRD patients (2-5). The presence of extra-osseous calcification reflects the severity of atherosclerotic vascular disease and predicts cardiovascular events in uremic patients. The clinical relevance of extra-osseous calcification is highlighted by the fact that guidelines have included their research as essential for the diagnosis of disorders of mineral metabolism in the CKD (part of the so-called syndrome ´´CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASEMINERAL AND BONE DISEASE´´).
The Kray twins were Britain´s most notorious gangsters. Ruling London´s underworld for more than a decade, they were among the most powerful and feared men in the city, becoming celebrities in their own right. Their reign of terror ended on 8 March 1969 when both brothers were sentenced to life. Ronnie ended his days in Broadmoor - his raging insanity only controlled by massive doses of drugs. Reg served almost three decades in some of Britain´s toughest jails before being released on compassionate grounds and dying just a few months later. With an updated foreword from Fred Dinenage who compiled the book from a series of interviews behind prison bars, Our Story is the classic account that explodes the myths surrounding the Kray twins. In it, Reg and Ron set the record straight, telling the full story of their brutal careers of crime and their years inside. Compelling, vivid and disturbing, this is the definitive story of two legendary criminals.
